I'm currently writing on my iphone. Don't want to desturb the roommate to write a blog. He's already asleep and I just returned from the partying.
So, let me tell you all about my first day of orientation here at the Medical University of Gdańsk. It started off with a rough morning. I barely slept, maybe a total of 4 hours. Blame it on the headache, or nerves. I get to the university on time at 8 am. Sit in the lecture hall.
We have a pretty concise presentation on the university, student clubs and activities, divided into our groups for medical school (they don't change for the whole study). We then meet second year students who lead us in a scavenger like campus tour. Where we're running around to different faculties and important areas on campus like the library, grocery store and apteka. The word means pharmacy, but it's also where you find the cheapest alcohol.
Afte the campus tour we sit down and ate as our group. Went to the nice little Italian restaurant, only restaurant near/on campus. Got to meet and know my group a little better. One downfall. An extremes high percentage is Swedish. And they talk in Sweden. When they realize this they do switch languages and talk in English to include me, but I lose the conversation all the time.
After that we had our first 1.5 hr polish lesson where I learned some "English" polish words, and a few sentences like what's your name, my name is, where are you from. I will write these phrases tomorrow as I'll be on my computer.
After that we were done for the day. So I quickly made it back to my dorm, made a quick snack of sandwiches, and passed out as a nap. Cause once 6 o'clock roles around. There's no stopping then.
I get up at 6 PM to head over to the freshers get together. When I arrive, there is a table full of beer, cups of four different kinds of punch, and of course as a first year you have to wear a hair net on your head. It was a sigh to see almost an unlimited supply of alcohol for free! This is put on from upper year students. Does not get funded from the PLN 3000 paid to the university for orientation. But then again. A 40 ounce bottle of vodka, is about $7.00 Canadian.
After mingling and haveing a few drinks (or few too many for some people) we get divided into separate groups, and go have dinner as a smaller group.
After some dinner and small talk with the group. We eventually meet up with more people and it turns into a preparty before heading out to the pub. Well the second years provide all the alcohol for this as well. And encourage you to drink if you'd like, as starting next week there goes your fun.
I enjoyed the small talk and getting to know some people. But others reminded me as if I was at a high school party where no one knows their tolerance or it's their first time drinking. Some people were just ridiculously inebriated. I had a few drinks but nothing extensive, as we start class at 8am. So anyways, here is is now 11:22 PM and I'm in bed when all the other first years are heading out to the pub. Problems with being old.
So far, it has been a great and I am enjoying the experiences. Now off to bed as I am not 18!
