Sept 19

Hey Guys!

Today has been another basic day. Touring the town to buy stuff, and coming back to my room and eating. I've decided tomorrow I will be more of a tourist and travel into oldtown. Maybe buy some slippers to wear around the residence, and a pair of cheap sandals for the showers(standing on a face cloth isn't the safest thing to do)!

I traveled by tram and bus up to the IKEA, thanks to another first year student who did pre med here, she suggested it for a towel. It took about a half hour to get there, nothing too extravagant. I can't remember the last time I was in an IKEA store in Toronto, but if it's like the one here, I'd rather it be in English.

So, the store is HUGE! It's a full showroom. And because I know very little Polish, I had to walk the entire store to find out where the bath accessories are. The store forces you to go up stairs and to the right, and with my luck, the bathroom accessories are in the far back left corner, on the first floor.

Atleast I found and bought towels!! What I thought I bought was a bath towel, face/hand towel, and a facecloth. What I actually bought was a bath towel (knew the polish translation), a towel that is the width of a face towel, but double the length, and four face cloths. Not too bad for PLN 40.

I was extremely hungry when I left IKEA, and the KFC was so tempting.I stopped in to see what their prices were like. I've heard two things. 1. They're the same price as in Canada but PLN instead, so 1/3 the price. 2. The prices are jacked and more expensive then what we would pay in Canada even after conversion.

Most of the meals were PLN 11 - 15! I thought that it was a good enough price to treat myself to lunch. For PLN 13.70 I got a "Kanapki Krakow Longer" combo. It came with two chicken sandwiches (kanapki) similar to Burger King's Original chicken sandwich, except instead of mayonnaise, they had a sweet and sour ketchup. It also came with an order of fries, and a drink. The drink was about the size of a Tim Horton's small. Disappointed in the size of drink (I was extremely thirsty as well, a lot of walking) but cant be disappointed with the amount of food and price I paid!

I took the bus back down to the Galeria Bałtycka and thought I would get some grocery shopping done. That was part of my plan when I woke up. I went into Carrefour to buy a few things, and once I was done and ready to go to the checkout, I thought I might have to use my credit card as I wasn't sure if I had enough cash on me.I had a hamper half full and a basket filled. After the checkout I was shocked! I only spent PLN 223!! Taking away the price of the hamper (PLN 40), food storage containers (PLN 25)and frying pan (PLN 30), PLN 128 for all the food I bought I think is a steal!!!

  • 1 family size bag of corn flakes (the only cereal I found)
  • 2 jars of mustard (a rare condiment)
  • 2 L of milk
  • 1 can of peas
  • 1 can of corn
  • 2 cans of nestea
  • 1 4 pack of activia yogurt (120G, double ours!)
  • 1 container of margarine
  • 1 L of orange juice
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 10 large eggs (1 broke in the journey home)
  • 1 jar sliced pickles
  • 1 squeezable hellmans mayonnaise
  • 6 kaisers
  • 100g ham
  • 100g lunch meat (thought it was turkey)
  • 2 bowls
  • 2 plates
  • 1 kg pepperettes
  • 8 hangers
  • 1 frozen pizza
I think that's insane!!!

Once I lugged all the groceries home, reason why I did not buy shoes/slippers or a wirelesss router at the same time, I found out that there is a closer grocery store around the corner from my dorm! How I dislike Google for this reason!

After I got home around 5:45, I decided that a shower and relaxation was a great way to finish off the day.

Enjoy the photos!
